Chapter 32

The growl of the Pale’s combat vehicles shattered the tense silence, their engines an ominous prelude to the chaos that was about to unfold. As the headlights pierced the darkness, I tightened my grip on my handgun.

“Pale warriors incoming!” I bellowed, alerting the camp to the new threat. The Leeches, already a formidable force, were now bolstered by the arrival of our most feared enemies.

And these were warriors with vehicles and ranged weapons, which meant our hit-and-run tactics would be less useful as they could return fire and match speed.

The Pale warriors, atop their roofless modified vehicles, charged ahead with swords, rifles, and crossbows at the ready. Their silver hair and eyes gleamed under the Deathmoon’s light, a stark contrast to the gray-skinned Leeches that swarmed the base of the walls.

“Outriders, form up!” I commanded, leading our own motley band of lightly armored warriors into battle. We roared into action, our motorcycles kicking up clouds of ash as we met the Pale’s onslaught head-on. One group attempted to divert the Pale while we opened fire.

But this time, the strategy didn’t work too well.

The Pale returned fire, and frustration mounted in my chest as the first of the Outriders fell in combat, riddled with crossbow bolts as he crashed his motorcycle into a welter of steel and fire. And the Pale didn’t slow down as they came at us, forcing us to remain on the move.

But we had planned on this. Some of the Outriders ditched their bikes and rode double with others to fire at the Pale even as we rode. Others simply delegated themselves to running interference, bolting across the field of battle at breakneck speeds, risking their lives so the Pale would be forced to split into smaller groups.

But that meant the Leeches were free to charge the camp — we couldn’t deal with both groups. Bolstered by new numbers, the Leeches howled with lust for qi, and they began their charge at the walls.

Damn…

There was nothing I could do about it. Soon enough, the clash of metal and the cries of combat filled the air, a cacophony that drowned out the howl of the wind.

Meanwhile, I rode without double, having holstered my sidearm. After all, I had just the thing for this kind of engagement…

I fed a trickle of qi into my Q-Blade and rode straight at the nearest enemy — a Jeep with a Pale driver and a gunner. The silver eyes of the gunner narrowed as he spotted me, and a foul grin marked his face as he took aim.

But I knew my stuff. I activated Exalted Eye technique, speeding up my reaction time and control of the bike. I swerved, my senses so heightened I actually saw the rounds leave the Pale’s rifle before they smashed into the bare ground, kicking up dirt where I had been only a moment ago.

Less than a breath later, I was upon them. They didn’t even have time to look surprised as I shot past, Q-Blade extended.
